Cougars on a roll

Houston Cougars continued their brilliant start to the season as they thumped Tulsa Golden Hurricane 45-10 in the NCAA American Athletic Conference.

Tulsa, coming in with a record of 1-3, and playing at home, were hoping to kick-start their season against Houston who boasted a record of 3-1.

Houston had begun the season with a more favorable schedule than Tusla, who had faced harder matches on the road against 19th ranked Oklahoma St and ninth ranked Ohio St.

The match

Freshman running back Alton McCaskill helped the Houston Cougars get off to a sensational start as he scored three rushing touchdowns (TD) in the first half to put his side 28-0 up.

One of those runs was a 27 yard straight line burst through the middle of the Tulsa defense.

There were missed tackles aplenty for the Tulsa defense all night, including a few in the touchdown run by McCaskill.

Houston wide receiver Jeremy Singleton also benefited from Tulsa’s poor tackling on his 47 yard touchdown reception in the first quarter.

Cougar quarterback (QB) Clayton Tune threw a quick pass out to Singleton in the flat and Singleton did the rest, running through attempted tackles, en route to a quick 6.

The Tulsa defense seemed disinterested all evening and were poor overall and the Tulsa offense didn’t fare any better either.

Here is the sequence of first half possessions for the Tulsa offense: punt, punt, fumble, interception, interception, punt, and then finally a field goal.

The offensive line could not protect QB Davis Brin as he was sacked four times and pressured heavily all evening.

Brin felt the heat and his constant discomfort manifested itself into three interceptions.

The second half started with a glimmer of hope as Brin completed two quick passes in a row. His third pass though, was completed to Houston defender Gervarrius Owens who promptly returned it 45 yards for a TD.

Brin, taking a cue from his defensive teammates, had a chance to tackle Owens NUY his half-hearted effort did not slow Owens.

At that point the score was 35-3 and the final result was a foregone conclusion.

What does it mean?

Houston’s record improves to 4-1 with the win and they move on to face struggling Tulane (1-4) this week. Tulsa were beaten with the fourth time in five and they have a lot to figure out before they face Memphis (3-2) this Saturday.
