Postponements due to international call-ups meant there were only four matches in League One this week, but there was still plenty of action in the games that remained.

Plymouth go top

Plymouth climbed to the summit of League One with a 2-1 win over Burton Albion.

After Ryan Hardie had struck the crossbar early on, it was Conor Grant that opened the scoring for the Pilgrims with a low drive from the edge of the box.

Hardie was involved in the second goal, however, holding the ball up for Ryan Broom to sweep home to make it 2-0 – his first goal since arriving on loan from Peterborough United.

A change of tactics saw a more threatening Burton side after the break; Lucas Akins pulling a goal back with a lovely turn and shot into the far corner.

But Argyle were able to hang on for the win and remain unbeaten since the opening day of the season.

Gregory gets the winner for Wednesday

Lee Gregory was the hero at Hillsborough as his strike gave Sheffield Wednesday a 1-0 victory over Bolton Wanderers.

The first half saw half chances fall to both sides, with Eoin Doyle having the biggest opportunity to score for Bolton.

The Irish marksman had the chance to put the visitors ahead but Dominic Iorfa did enough to put him off with some unorthodox defending.

At the other end, Saido Berahino should have put the Owls ahead but could only find the side netting from a tight angle.

The decisive moment came midway through the second half as Jack Hunt put the ball into a dangerous area for Gregory to score the only goal of the game.

Important win for Ipswich

Ipswich Town’s bounced back from defeat at Accrington with a 2-1 win at home to Shrewsbury.

A dominant first period saw Conor Chaplin open the scoring for Ipswich with a poacher’s finish after Macauley Bonne’s header was well saved.

But Town have conceded the most home goals in English football and surely enough, Shaun Whalley had the Shrews on level terms with a sublime left-footed drive into the top corner.

Equally, no side has scored more home goals than Ipswich and their winner inevitably came from the head of Bonne; the hometown striker flicking home his ninth of the season from a corner.

It is now just one defeat in five for the Tractor Boys, who are up to 14th in the table.

Wycombe blow Gills away in seven-minute blitz

It hasn’t taken long for Wycombe Wanderers to find their feet in the third tier, nor did it take them long to establish their dominance over Gillingham as they scored twice in the first seven minutes to secure a comfortable 2-0 win at Adams Park.

Just two minutes in, Gareth McLeary raced clear of the defence to lash home a fine effort high into the net.

Brandon Hanlon netted the second after a long-range strike took a couple of deflections into his path; he calmly slotted the ball home – 2-0, too good.

The Gills’ afternoon got worse as Vadaine Oliver, usually so deadly in front of goal, ballooned a penalty over the bar and while Wycombe squandered chances to make the winning margin even bigger, they’ve now won their opening five home fixtures of the season for the first time in their history.

How it stands

Plymouth rose to top spot in the league after promotion rivals Wigan and Sunderland had their games postponed – both of those sides have two games in hand on the leaders.

Wycombe also capitalized on the lack of matches as they went second in the table.

Shrewsbury remain in deep trouble, they are second bottom having played 12 games.
